Reading

Five people – Frankenstein, Wednesday, Astrid, Count Dracula and Jack Skellington – have written to the problem page of a magazine. Read them all and look up the vocabulary you don’t know.

Dear therapist,

I’ve got a problem and I need some advice.
My parents don’t like my friends. They blame them for everything that goes wrong. They say I have to stop going out with them. What should I do?

Wednesday Addams, 15

Hi,

I’m writing to ask you some advice with my problem. I never have any money and I’m always broke. As soon as I get my pocket money from Dr. Frankenstein, I spend it the first time I go out.

Frankenstein, 18

Hello,

I’m writing to you because I need advice. These days I´m very stressed with homework and tests. I feel like I don´t have time for anything, like meeting my friends!. I can´t have a quiet rest because the only thing that I think about is homework and studying.
What should I do?

Astrid Deetz, 16

Dear counselor,

Some people told me my brother has some new friends who are often in trouble with the police. Do you think I should tell my parents?

Jack Skellington, 16

Hello,

I moved here two months ago from Romania and still don’t know anyone apart from the people I work with. I don’t like going out during the day because the sunlight hurts me, so I find it very hard to meet people.

Count Dracula, 14

Writing

An email

You work on an advice website which helps teenagers with their problems. Here is the answer to Frankenstein’s mail. Choose one of the other five people’s mail (Wednesday Adams, Astrid Deetz, Jack Skelington or Count Dracula) and write an email giving them advice about what to do. Follow the structure below.

STRUCTURE | EXAMPLE
Greetings Dear Frankenstein,
Paragraph 1: say thanks for the email / express understanding of the problem. Thank you for your mail. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. This is a problem a lot of people have. I know how hard it is to save money when there are so many cool things to spend it on. Here’s what I think you should do.
Paragraph 2: formulate ideas to help that person with the problem. Use modal verbs (should, shouldn’t, ought to, have to… and connectors(so, because, firstly, also…). Firstly, maybe you shouldn’t take all your money with you when you go out. You can try to take only what you need and leave the rest at home. Also, I think you should leave your credit card at home, because it is much easier to spend too much money when you use it. Another good thing is to keep an account of what you spend every day, so you can be aware of how much you are spending.
Paragraph 3: conclusion. Express your support again by saying you hope your advice will be helpful. You’re not alone in this, and there are people who want to help you succeed. I hope this helps you solve your problem.
Closure Best wishes,
